Well!! it appears that half of a century has gone
by since we were walking up and down the halls of Albany High School.
This is an occasion to celebrate and celebrate we will. Your Albany
High School Reunion Committee has set the date for our 50th
Reunion for April 30 - May 2, 2010. Everyone is excited so make your
plans to attend and register now.
FRIDAY NIGHT - APRIL 30
- EXCHANGE CLUB FAIRGROUNDS
A 6:00 p.m.old-fashioned pep rally is
planned. We are in the AHS gym and our football team has just won the
South Georgia championship by beating the Musketeers of Richmond Academy
14 -7. We are to play the next day for the State AAA championship
against the Marietta High School Blue Devils. As Albany Herald writer
Vic Smith wrote, “Then it was on to Atlanta for the titanic clash with a
Marietta team that had averaged more than 33 points a game, boasted one
of the states most impenetrable defenses and went into the title contest
favored by as much as 20 points in some quarters”. Every single North
Georgia paper reported that Marietta would win in a blowout. At our pep
rally we will hear from some of the football players, coaches,
cheerleaders, managers, band members and most importantly, we will hear
from the greatest of all AHS fans - the Class of 1960. The season will
be recapped from the opening 27-0 romp over Benedictine to the day
before the Marietta game. Dress is casual; however, please remember
that this is a pep rally and either wear or bring some orange and green.
SATURDAY PICNIC - MAY 1 - RADIUM SPRINGS
A12 o’clock noon Saturday Picnic is
scheduled to be held at Radium Springs. Of course Radium Springs no
longer has the Casino and is not operated the way we remember it (no
swimming - no smooching). However, we will all be pleasantly surprised
at the work that has already been done and the work that is to be done
as Radium Springs “comes back to life.” The island is being transformed
into a Secret Garden as one feature of a multi-million dollar facelift
now under way. Included is a Day Lily Garden, Butterfly Garden,
Perennial Garden and Casino Garden. The Casino Garden sits exactly in
the footprint of the original building with a windowed wall framing the
same view of the springs that we enjoyed. Eight thousand trees and
plants have been ordered for planting at the Springs. The Audubon
Society has identified Radium’s Overlook Park as a must-see sight for
bird watchers. We will have two presentations on the future use of the
Radium Springs property - one will be on the seventy (70) acres
immediately adjoining the Springs as the land reaches toward the Flint
River and the other will be on the two-hundred (200) acres of land
formerly known as the Radium Springs Country Club. Radium Springs is
scheduled to reopen sometime in March, 2010 and our class will be one of
the Springs first guests. You won’t want to miss this picnic. Dress is
casual.
SATURDAY NIGHT - MAY 1 - MERRY ACRES
MOTEL
At 6:30 p.m.our class will gather at the
Merry Acres Motel Event Center and continue to relive those shared
memories that have held us together for fifty years. A good meal, good
stories and entertainment will be provided. Please know that our band
is on a major recording label and features such “beach music” hits as
From the Gutter to You Ain’t Up and If Today Was a Fish, I’d
Throw It Back In. Your Entertainment Committee is sponsoring and
will provide a bar offering wine, beer, water and soft drinks. Any
other refreshments you desire, you will have to bring. Dress is “dressy
casual”.
ROCK HOUSE
The Rock House at Merry Acres Motel will
be available all weekend as a Hospitality Room/Gathering Place - a place
to simply “hang out”. It will be available beginning Friday morning
and will shut down at noon on Sunday. The historic Arctic Bear sign
will lead you to the location of the Rock House. Raymond Barlow’s
“loaded” (our music) juke box will once again be back in place.
PICTURE - AHS CLASS OF 1960
Our group picture will be made at the
Friday night Pep Rally. All the orange and green should make for a good
picture. Don’t miss it!!!
